IF YOU WANT TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER EDUCATOR
Volunteer Educators (VEs) are young, hungry for cultural exchange and eager to develop their personal strengths to share it with a large multicultural community.
Q1. What are the criteria to become a Volunteer Educator?
To become a Volunteer Educator you need to be a migrant, refugee or asylum-seeker, 18-35 years old and located in an EU country. You should have an average level in reading and understanding English. Of course it is an important bonus to have a high personal motivation to improve your skills, create a network and share your knowledge with others.
Volunteer Educators (VEs) will deliver a workshop to members of the host community or members of their ethnic community, or ideally, both! As VEs will offer their workshops for the local communities, they should either have good knowledge of the language of the country or be fluent in English. Basically, as a VE, you can prepare a workshop on anything that you are good at, and we will be there to support you! For example, you can give a workshop on how to write poetry, learn how to draw or how to play chess. However, if it’s a workshop that requires deep knowledge on the subject by the VE, we would prefer that you have studied or worked in that field before.
Q2. What are my responsibilities as a Volunteer Educator?
When you choose to become a Volunteer Educator, you will take the e-VELP online course (est. 40h) and will gain individual support, to train you to create and facilitate quality workshops with the purpose to share your knowledge.
- + As we are creating an AI coaching tool to make this course the most customized for you. Therefore you will fill in a questionnaire before taking the course. This might take 5 minutes.
- + After taking the course you will be asked to review the course elements you skipped based on the tool and will be interviewed about it. This might take an additional 5 hours in total.
- + After taking the course you will facilitate your workshop to get the certification.
- + optional: You have the chance to join a professional training with other participants to finish the course next to fellows and facilitate the workshop in April 2023 in Romania
Q3. Do I get any help during the course?
As a VE you will get the peer to peer support of one Volunteer Educator-TRAINER who will help you make the best out of your workshop idea.
Q4. What’s the point of the Artificial Intelligence Coaching Tool?
The AI coaching tool will customize the course content based on your individual experience and needs. Before starting the course you will fill in a questionnaire so the tool can estimate which chapters of the course will be relevant for you and which can be skipped. This tool helps you save time and energy.
Q5. Do I need to test the course as a Volunteer Educator?
No, this course is public for 1 year now and has been tested and approved already. The testing is about the AI coaching tool.
Q6. Which months will the participation of the e-VELP course take place?
You can start from January to March 2023. To complete the course including to host the workshop and give feedback about the AI coaching tool, it will take a maximum of 2 months.
Q7. Will I have to redo the e-course after the testing phase?
No. You will only need to take the classes as suggested by the AI tool, and then invest about 5 more hours to explore the rest of the content of the course to tell us whether you think you missed something important.
Q8. How many hours do I need to invest on average?
For the course we estimate 40h and a maximum of 5 hours helping us improve the AI coaching tool.
Q9. I am interested in delivering a workshop on a specific theme. How and where will I do that?
This is great! Please fill in this Google Form and we will get back to you asap. It is a great bonus if you already know your workshop topic. In that case you don’t need to identify your skills, knowledge & attitudes and you can start learning
- how to put together your workshop proposal
- to develop your pedagogical skills
- to enhance your communication and intercultural skills
- to develop your marketing and networking skills
- how to create the perfect workshop content

Q10. When is the trip to Romania for Volunteer Educators? What will I learn there?
It will be in the week of the 10th and 14th of April in 2023 and last for 4 days. During the live training the VEs will be finalising the course offline, in person, together with fellows and professional trainers. The motivation is that after the training the participants will have better and stronger chances to find employment or further education opportunities. Additionally, it opens up new career paths and opportunities for young refugees/migrants: with their university-certified training and real-world experience in creating and offering quality workshops, they can start a new career path as workshop facilitators, trainers, or educators.
Q11. Do I need to be an expert in a specific thematic way to participate as a Volunteer Educator?
No. We believe that each of us has something to share no matter if you learned it from university or if life taught you it. In the beginning of the course you will learn how to assess your skills and define your workshop topic.
Q12. When (approximately) will the workshops be delivered?
It depends on how fast the student finishes the course and finds a host organization to offer the workshop. From our experience the participants take 2 month to take the 40h online course and deliver their workshop. If you will join the live training in Romania, your workshop can be delivered there in April 2023.
Q13. I am not based in CY, DE, RO or IT. How can I still participate?
In that case you can not attend the live training in Romania, but you can still take the course remotely. To complete the course by delivering your workshop you will learn how to promote your workshop to host organizations to finally host it to an audience. You will be matched with a fellow VE-Trainer who will support you during your journey to become a workshop host.
Q14. The workshop I will deliver will be online or offline?
If you are located in a city with organizations whose communities match your target group, we are sure you will find organizations that will host your workshop. In the VE course you will prepare all the promotion material and ways of finding and communicating with potential host organizations. If there is no target audience in the place you are located, you can also find your right audience online. We will be there to support you.
Q15: Can I watch the e-course from my mobile device?
Yes but for some activities, like preparing the workshop content or writing a workshop proposal it will be necessary to have a desktop.
